One of the key aspects of straight razor shaving which most people tend to overlook is stropping. The normal use of your razor causes micro-damage and misalignment to the razor¡¯s blade. The more you shave, the more worn and misaligned your razor¡¯s blade becomes. This is when a razor strop comes into play!
If you are the owner of a quality straight razor or knife, you are likely aware that sharpening and stropping is required. Keep your straight edge shaving razors and knives sharp by using a high-quality strop like the Parker¡¯s Handmade Latigo Leather Strop.
Stropping helps to keep your razor in prime condition so you can ensure a smooth shave every time. Use it to strop a razor before each use and after use dry your razor with the synthetics stop backing that is standard on the Parker strop. If properly cared for, our quality strop can last a lifetime!
The Parker Safety Razor strop is made from quality Latigo leather, which is a version of cowhide leather with a heavy draw and medium break-in period.
This razor strop is made up of two strops?a leather strop and a fabric strop. The woven fabric strop is coarser and will remove particles that could damage the leather, such as rust, or dirt before you start stropping on the leather side. The leather side has a smooth surface that will do the majority of the work on the razor's surface to keep it straight and aligned.
Unlike 2 or 2.5-inch strops, this 3-inch strop covers the whole blade, since most razors are 3-inches long. An ideal choice for professionals and beginners alike, this 3-inch leather strop does not require you to use the x-stroke technique, which usually takes some practice.
Attach the metal O-ring to a fixed point with the strop¡¯s leather side facing up. Hold the razor by the tang at a 180-degree opening, resting the thumb on top & two fingers on the other side. Place the blade flat on the leading with the spine. Start with 15-20 round trips on the fabric side before stropping on the leather strop. As the cutting-edge points towards you use light pressure and move the razor blade away from you leading with the spine. On reaching the top of the strop, turn the razor blade over by rolling the tang between the thumb & fingers so that the cutting edge points away from you. Now gently draw the razor back towards you moving the razor¡¯s blade along the leather. Just do not apply too much pressure to avoid damaging the strop or razor. Both your razor and strop are fine instruments to treat with respect. Before you know it, you will be stropping like a pro.
